At the same time Svarog is supporting Ukrainians to :

  • cope with immediate electricity black-outs and to
  • build the electricity infrastructure they will need for the future

SVAROG

We fundraise for projects to install renewable solar and wind energy plants on the roofs of hospitals, rehabilitation centres and schools and close to water utilities, to diminish the suffering and inconvenience caused to the Ukrainian population by Russian military bombing of the country’s electricity infrastructure

Supported by

Following the Russian military’s repeated massive attacks on Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure since mid-2023, all regions of Ukraine now suffer 6-8 hours of electricity black-outs (or more), which causes major discomfort and inconvenience to all citizens and the risk of loss of life for the old, the very young and the sick and wounded.

SVAROG is helping to finance decentralized photovoltaic power plants on the roofs of hospitals, rehabilitation centres and schools and close to water utilities to keep the power on during black-outs. This is the fastest, cheapest and most environmentally friendly way to responding to this emergency.

About Us

We created SVAROG (the Slavic God of the sun and fire) to highlight the plight of Ukrainian citizens without electricity for long periods in 24 hours. SVAROG’s strategic choice was to become a significant fundraising vehicle for Ukrainian NGOs which could distribute emergency relief and build photovoltaic power plants on hospitals, rehabilitation centres and schools and next to water utilities.

Funding with impact!

The mayor of the towns of Chervonohrad and Sosnivka in the Lviv region asked the SVAROG team to supply the local hospitals with 50 blankets equipped with a portable battery and charger. This allows the batteries to be recharged during electricity times and provides a warm blanket for 30 hours.

We have done it! With donations from over 40 citizens from Lörrach, Freiburg and the surrounding area and a contribution from the Svarog team, 50 electric blankets, batteries and chargers were purchased. They were transported to Gervonorad and Sosnivka at the beginning of February and have arrived there. The mayor’s representative wrote to us:

“Congratulations, Mechtild and Richard!
On behalf of the mayor Andriy Zalivskyi and our entire community, I thank you and your entire team of caring people for helping to organize “warmth” for the poor and lonely residents of our city, and children with difficult life circumstances. May the Lord God reward your good deeds!
Thank you again! Glory to the heroes!”

These thanks are not only due to the Svarog team, but also to all those who contributed to making this delivery possible with their donations.

SVAROG's renewable Energy Fund for Ukraine (REFU)

SVAROG launched REFU in January 2025. We aim to have financed all 10 projects within the calendar year, and to be working on the next 10 projects to find finance for in 2026, and so on and so forth.

In its first tranche of projects, REFU has offered foundations a range of medium-sized projects costing between €25,000 and €98,000, with an average value of €61,700.

When these projects are realized, REFU’s cumulative investment into Ukrainian renewable energy will make a big difference to communities nationwide, and will help to heighten the profile of climate-friendly energy in the country.
